International students still struggle to get permanent residency

According to the recent report share by Statistics Canada, in the past 20 years, the number of international students in Canada has increased by five times. 

While the number of international students status transitioning to permanent residency is expected to become higher, there are still as many as 70% of international students that are unable to obtain PR status despite Canada’s favorable immigration policies released during the pandemic. 

According to data, international students under the age of 17 (25%) had a lower success rate in obtaining a PR, while older students have a higher success rate, but a lower success rate obtaining a study permit. 

In addition, in terms of geographic region, international students have the highest success rate if they have applied for PR in Alberta (42%), whereas the lowest is in BC (21%).
